Holly Ridge: The Perfect Spot For Your Child to Learn to Golf

Last fall, my then two-year-old son decided that he was going to play golf. He took a club that was entirely too big for him, and started hitting a golf ball in our backyard.

My wife and I thought it was cute, but we never seriously thought about getting him into golf, let alone lessons.

Much like any two year old, we assumed his attention to golf would drift into something else.

We were wrong.

With a mild fall last year, he often would get us out in the backyard with our clubs hitting golf balls. This lasted through the end of December, which needless to say, ended with him receiving a set of clubs for outdoor use and a plastic putting set for indoor use from Santa.

As the cold finally hit, his interest in golf turned to the indoor plastic set and into watching golf on television. After hundreds of rounds of indoor miniature golf, my wife and I decided to start looking at various places to take our son to learn.

We started looking around, mainly asking friends and Googling golf lessons on the Cape.

We stumbled upon Holly Ridge.

After doing a little research, we learned the course was under new ownership led by owners Joe and Jennifer O’Connor. We took a quick drive by the grounds, and took a chance by signing up our son for spring lessons.

As spring approached, we were excited to get him back out hitting some balls.

The very first day he was beyond excited to go. We got to the course and he immediately froze up, tears flowing not wanting us to leave his side.

Coach Jen scooped him up, gave him a big hug, and they walked to the putting green together. From there, it’s been nothing but great times for him at Holly Ridge.

It is safe to say that the moment Coach Jen scooped him up, we know that we made the right decision.

Coach Joe, Coach Jen and Golf Pro Coach Darren are the perfect teachers for children.

They encourage, they laugh, they teach the fundamentals, and most importantly, they teach them how to have fun with the game.

Now, he happily trots off to lessons each week while I (occasionally) happily trot off to the clubhouse for a beer.

We’ve been so impressed with the instructors that we signed him up for summer lessons, and have already signed up for fall.

Since lessons, we’ve been to Holly Ridge to just hit a bucket of balls, to a 4th of July party and to play a round. My wife, who has never golfed a day in her life, is going to be taking lessons next spring and summer at Holly Ridge.

If you’re looking for a locally owned, family business to support while you or your child learn golf, Holly Ridge is worth a look.
